A NOTE FROM MOLLY

What’s up you beautiful peeps,

If your November feels a little hectic, I’ve got you. We’re cooking Thanksgiving so you can be cool as a little cucumber this holiday season, not stuck at the stove. Everything is made from real ingredients, sourced with intention, and prepared by our small but mighty team here in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

FAMILY TRADITIONS

My roots are Southern through and through. My dad is from West Virginia and my mom is from Kentucky, which is why we say dressing instead of stuffing and why creamed onions and hot slaw always show up on the table. These dishes were passed from hand to hand, story to story, and now they live on in our home. I do most of the cooking these days, but every year my mom still prepares the hot slaw and a batch of Murdyl’s Rolls. They’re often like little hockey pucks that never quite rise by the fire, but we look forward to them anyway because it’s tradition. They taste like home.

MAKING MEMORIES WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS

In our house, tradition tasted the same every year, and that was the comfort of it. My mom never budged from her menu: turkey with dressing, hot slaw, creamed onions, broccoli casserole crowned with Ritz crackers and Velveeta, a baked yam with butter, cranberry sauce that slid out of the can with that perfect wobble, and a basket of Murdyl’s Rolls, warm and slathered in butter. Some years Ron Ellis showed up with Grasshopper Pie, all crème de menthe silk in a chocolate cookie wafer crust dolloped with Cool Whip , and other years we kept it classic with pumpkin pie, purchased from Bakers Square in Los Gatos. In the 80s, when the first bread machine landed on our counter, the whole house smelled like a bakery, and we’d break into a loaf that was crunchy outside and light in the middle. This is our simple family tradition that feels more special, every year I get older.
